JORDAN: PORTRAIT OF A KINGDOM
The National Association of Women Artists is pleased to present Jordan: Portrait of a Kingdom, an exhibition featuring work by New York based photographer Leah Morgan. Presented for the first time is a collection of photographs that Morgan took while traveling through Jordan. The exhibition will be on view from May 3 through May 30, 2017.
The works on view show Morgan’s ability to form personal connections with her subjects. Nothing feels forced or staged here. Rather, we as viewers sense that these images are Morgan’s intuitive response to her environment, what she was seeing and feeling at the moment the picture was taken. The result is an intimate portrait of Jordan articulated through its people, customs, and geography.
Exhibition highlights center on a Bedouin family as it prepares a midday meal together. The event takes shape in images of a young man serving tea while members eat a traditional dish of lamb and rice under a tent, which offers some respite from the scorching desert sun. Next stop is the bustling marketplace in the capital city of Amman. The place comes to life through portraits of proud vendors along with candid shots of shoppers and local goods for sale. The beauty and history of the ancient city of Petra is celebrated though images of The Treasury, the astounding rock cut architecture, and tourist-driven activity that includes camels, horse-drawn carriages, and merchants.
Morgan has built her photographic practice around a distinct way of story telling that weaves between the personal and universal. Reflecting on Jordan, she says, “I am always striving to bring a humanist element to my work. If this trip proved anything to me, it is that differences aside, an inherent fabric exists in this world connecting all humans to each other.”
All proceeds from sales will benefit the Jordan River Foundation and its mission to provide safe, prosperous, and sustainable futures for Jordanian children, women, and their communities. To learn more: www.jordanriver.jo
